BENCHMARK RESULTS

Note:   You might have noticed that the platform we used for the Pentium III is based on VIA's Apollo Pro A chipset. Now, it is widely known that Pentium III does better on 3D games in platforms based on Intel's BX 440 chipset, doing about 4-5% better particularly in Quake III Arena.

On the other hand, the Pentium III runs almost similarly in both BX and Apollo Pro A chipset when doing office applications. (See: Anand's review of i815 chipset. We would have wanted to use a BX-based platform but we don't have one at the time the Duron and the Thunderbird were available for our testing. You should consider the chipset factor when interpreting the results below.)

And before we bring you the results, just a few word about the MSIK7T Pro motherboard used in this test. It's a damn solid Socket A platform: no crashes whatsoever during the test. Wish the MSI K7TPro had additional overclocking features aside from that in the BIOS that allowed us to set a higher front side bus.

Winstone 99 is one of the good indicators of how a computer system would perform in real world applications. It uses popular softwares such as Corel WordPerfect 8 Lotus SmartSuite 97 and Microsoft Office 98, simulating multi-tasking processes (using different application at the same time) to gauge the performance of a computer system.

Office Application Performance(27258 bytes)

The results are clear, the Duron and the Thunderbird give the Pentium III a run for its money.

We also threw in a couple of benchmarks from the Winbench suite of ZDBop, to find out the respective strength of each processor.

CPUMark32

With a larger L2 cache, the Pentium III 600 leads by a comfortable margin over the Duron in this test. However, the Thunderbird apparently hold its own against the Pentium III.

But what about the floating point power?

FPUWinmark

With a 3-stage FPU pipeline of the Athlon or K7,K75 core, the Duron and the Thunderbird clearly smokes out the Pentium III in this benchmark.

We also ran the popular diagnostic and benchmarking tool, Sisoft Sandra and here are the results:

Sisoft Sandra: CPU Dhrystone (19925 bytes)

Sisoft Sandra: FPU Dhrystone (20065 bytes)

In both of these Sisoft Sandra benchmarks, the Pentium III is left behind by the Duron and the Thunderbird.

3DMark200 (14482 bytes)

In 3D Mark, the Pentium III 600 leaves the Duron in a comfortable margin but the overclocked Duron 660 is practically breathing down Pentium's neck.

Ok. So what about gaming performance?
